God's Everlasting Covenants
It’s wonderful to know that our God is a God of Covenant. He is a God who keeps His promises and fulfills His Word. God promised us that He would send down His only son who would die on a cross giving us salvation from our sins, and as a consequence, eternal life with Him in heaven. We believe that when we ask Jesus into our hearts, He makes a Covenant with us that, and as long as we follow Him, living our lives according to His Word, He is faithful to keep His Covenant with us forever.
Sometimes however, even though we know these great truths, doubt can still enter about whether God truly loves us or if He will actually continue to be faithful to us if we sin. We wonder, if we repent, will the Lord take us back forgetting our sin, and continue to work out His plan for our lives. These little doubts and fears can build a barrier in our relationship with Jesus as we don’t fully trust His character and understand who He is.
If we want assurance of God’s faithfulness to complete what He started in our lives, there is a way to see God’s character that is unfolding before our very eyes. There is a chance to witness God’s faithfulness and promise to commit to His Covenants, even over thousands of years in history. If we want to see how faithful a God we serve, He has given us living proof of His character and love through a little people group. This people group has existed for four thousand years, starting with a man called Abraham. God made a Covenant with Abraham that through him a nation would be raised up to be a vehicle for God’s voice to the world. This Nation would have a land of its own and through her the world would be blessed, for out of them, would come forth God’s plan for world redemption.
“The LORD had said to Abram, Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you." Genesis12:1-3
God made a Covenant with the Nation of Israel over four thousand years ago and that Covenant is as real today as the day the Lord called Abraham out of the city of Ur. The Nation of Israel has come back to the land God promised her thousands of years ago. She has flourished in the land, just as the Word of Amos prophesized she would. She has blessed the world, for it is through her that we have everything we hold dear to us as Christians – the Word of God, the Law of Moses, the great Fore Fathers of our faith and most importantly Jesus our Messiah!
“The people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption as sons; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises. Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen.” Romans 9: 4-5
God’s Covenant with Abraham has not changed nor has any part of it been forgotten! We stand on that Covenant with Abraham our father, as a foundation for our faith (Romans 4:16). The Jewish people are a living testimony of a God who is alive, who is faithful and who keeps His Covenants! What an assurance and foundation. We then have to believe that if God will keep his Covenant with them, He will keep His Covenant with us! God’s Word does not lie and we have no reason to doubt or fear His Character in our own lives. He has kept the Nation of Israel and will continue to keep them until His return! In the same way He will continue to be faithful to you and will continue His plan for your life until He returns! If there is doubt or fear, look to the Word of God and to the living testimony of God’s Character in the working out and faithfulness to His people Israel. They are an example of His faithfulness shown to you. Praise the Lord!
